University Leadership Comes Together for 84th LUMS Board Meeting

LUMS Board of Trustees Meeting 2021

At the LUMS Board of Trustees meeting, the LUMS leadership presented how LUMS is positioning itself in the higher education landscape.

The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad, spoke about the 35th anniversary of LUMS and the how the University commemorated its decades-long association with industry partners on December 11, 2021. He elaborated that the founders of the university, Founding Pro Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali Sb, Pro Chancellor, Mr. Razak Dawood, Member Board of Trustees, Dr. Parvez Hassan and Rector, Mr. Shahid Hussain took part in a panel discussion on the occasion. “They spoke about the LUMS vision, its values and the impact it has had on Pakistan. So, it seems appropriate today to highlight how that vision has evolved and some of the milestone achievements we can all be proud of. The first 35 years have seen LUMS become a household name in Pakistan. In the coming decades, LUMS will gain as much prominence across South Asia.”

Dr. Ahmad also discussed the collaboration with the University of Baltistan. In the pilot project underway, 150 LUMS students will work with local students to take five courses in Skardu. These courses on e-commerce, entrepreneurship, hydrology, green energy, and life sciences will be offered next July and will be co-taught by the University of Baltistan and LUMS faculty. “The research collaborations are equally promising as evidence-based interventions on these areas as well a glacial melting, precious metals and tourism will also be explored,” he added.  

Following this, Dr. Tariq Jadoon spoke about how the Office of the Provost is focusing on the sustainability of the different centres at the University as well as teaching excellence. “As far as majors and minors are concerned, we have two new courses in data sciences and environmental studies. LUMS has five Schools and this provides us with the unique opportunity for transdisciplinary studies.” 

Later on, the Deans Dr. Alnoor Bhimani, Dr. Ali Khan, Dr. Sabieh Anwar, Dr. Sadaf Aziz and Dr. Faisal Bari each gave presentations on their respective schools and the new directions initiated. Directors of different Centres also spoke about significant contributions being made towards creating a dynamic research environment at LUMS.

Attendees were also shown the final design of a new Central Building at LUMS, which will house a student centre, 6 university-wide Centres, a large 500 seat amphitheatre, a museum, as well as classrooms.
